Capturing James and Aleida’s Engagement Session in Deep Cove
The Beginning of a Love Story: How James Met Aleida
James and Aleida’s love story is like a hallmark story. James met Aleida through me (his sister). My dad suggested that I set Aleida and James up because they were both single at the time. Eventually, I sent a message to Aleida asking her what she thought of James, and she said, “He’s kind of cute.” I asked if they wanted to connect through Facebook, and the rest is history.
Aleida and James share a similar sense of humour; they belly laugh whenever I see them together. They truly bring out the best in each other.
I got a new camera lens last spring and wanted to test it out, and James was planning on proposing to Aleida. He hinted that he wanted me to capture their moment and tried to keep Aleida from guessing his plans by saying, “We need more pictures together.” So, one afternoon, James set up a photo session in Deep Cove. He gave me the ring, so Aleida had no chance of finding it, and we came up with a signal when he needed it.
We started off the photo session with a casual stroll along the waterside. James was so nervous! I assured them I was merely there to come along on their date and pretend I wasn’t there. It all felt so natural.
Deep Cove: The Perfect Location for Photoshoots
Deep Cove is situated in Vancouver, BC. It is known for its breathtaking views of the mountains and the serene waters of the inlet. This picturesque locale is a beautiful gem, offering tranquil waters perfect for kayaking, scenic hiking trails, and cozy picnic spots. The lush green of the forest against the backdrop of the mountains creates a magical setting ideal for capturing love stories.
James chose this location because it held a special place in their relationship; he took Aleida there for multiple dates early on in their relationship. It was a place where they had their first adventurous outing together, kayaking.
The Moment of Surprise: A Proposal to Remember
James would surprise Aleida by scaring her from behind and making her laugh. He did it once, but I told them the shot could be better if I switched lenses. At that moment, Aleida was prompted to close her eyes, and I gave James the ring while I pretended to change camera lenses.
James got on one knee, and I told him to go. Aleida eventually turned around and was taken off guard. She was surprised and ecstatic! She said yes. The emotions were high, and these moments were captured with tears of joy.

James and Aleida are so happy with their photographs, as they perfectly capture the essence of their special moment.
“Kim captured the pure joy when James asked to be with him forever… My favourite part of our engagement photo session was walking in the forest at Deep Cove, holding hands. I could not have asked for a better photographer to capture our big live moments.”
As I capture moments like this, I am reminded of why I like to capture portrait photography. Moments that are candid and precious are rewarding and bring joy to myself and the couple involved.
